The Tamworth Country Music Festival 2014 has been described as “a stand out” in winning the RH Dougherty Award for Innovation in Special Events at the 2015 LG NSW Local Government Awards.
The awards were presented at part of Local Government Week Awards in Sydney last Thursday night.
Tamworth Region Mayor Col Murray and General Manager Paul Bennett were on hand to accept the award in the Division B category of a population ranging from 30,000 to 100,000.
“This is a great result and comes just weeks after the 2015 Festival won the digital marketing award at the NSW Inland Tourism Awards,” said Cr Murray. “It is nice to see all the hard work being recognised, especially as the much-loved event continues to go from strength to strength with new attractions being added.”
The awards judges said the Festival is “such a well-known event that puts Tamworth and Australia on the map” and has “captured the unique country music market in Australia and made it synonymous with Tamworth and the Golden Guitar Awards”.
“Excellent to see the strategic planning and detailed evaluation with strong directions for growing audiences and new initiatives such as the FamilyZone and FanZone to entice younger audiences as well,” the judges said. “Great to see large events also taking a serious policy approach to reducing waste, water and energy and being as sustainable as possible. Excellent uses of ambassadors for the event and one that will keep on growing to NSW, national and even international audiences.”
The judges said the Festival is “an event all Australians can be proud of and one that should be on the must see and experience list of things to do in our great country”.
“Congratulations to Tamworth Regional Council for hosting the event in its 42nd year and continuing to develop those partnerships that are the backbone of every great event - community, volunteers and business and industry,” they said.
The RH Dougherty Awards recognise and encourage greater understanding and communication by councils to their local communities. The Innovation in Special Events award was open to any event produced and owned by a NSW council in the 2014 calendar year.
Highly commended in the category was AlburyCity Council for their 2014 A-League Event with Melbourne Heart vs Perth Glory.
